Babo Bear from Yoyamart

March 2, 2013

ABL has always been a fan of the Uglydolls.

This month, David Horvath announced the release of Babo Bear.

Uglydolls is now a huge company.   They decided to have the plush company GUND do their doll distribution.

Instead of waiting for it to hit the bigger chain stores, Shay Fei Fei purchased Babo Bear from Yoyamart one of the small business specialty shops.  There used to be two shops here in the San Francisco Kidrobot and Giant Robot.  However, they closed down because there was not enough support to keep them open.

If you don’t want your local stores or the smaller guys to shut down and disappear, you should support them by buying from them.

If you have something in mind and can afford it, buy from the smaller businesses when you can!

Do you know who Paul Krugman is?

March 1, 2013

Page_6Paul Krugman is a Nobel Prize winning economist who wrote “End This Depression Now“.  ABL saw him at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club to get a book signed for her dad.

IMG_0131ABL likes Paul because he creates economic awareness.

He says a country is not a company.  Check out his blog, look him up and find insight in what he has to say.

Drive My Car

February 27, 2013

Page_6ABL gravitated to the HONDA FIT because of the bang for my buck.  Before purchasing the car, there were a few things ABL had to consider.  These are not meant to scare anyone, just to make people aware of additional expenses that creep up.

1. PARKING : Where is your car going to live? (If you do not have a garage, you may have to pay extra)
FORMULA
$X = MONTHLY PARKING HOME + MONTHLY PARKING WORK + MONTHLY PARKING STREET/GARAGE x 12
2. USAGE : Where do you plan to drive your car?
FORMULA
Y = (APPX DISTANCE per MONTH) + (VACATION DRIVES APPX DISTANCE per Month) x 12
3. GAS, OIL and MAINTENANCE : What is you car going to eat to stay alive and how often do you plan on grooming it (car wash)?
GAS = Y/ YOUR CAR’S MILES PER GALLON
Z = GAS + (OIL CHANGE x 4 QUARTERS) + MAINTENANCE
4. INSURANCE and REGISTRATION
I = INSURANCE + REGISTRATION

ADD:
ADDITIONAL EXPENSE = $X + $Z + $I

*If you are buying a used car over 6 years add $S for SMOG TEST

Something also to note, what is the value of your time? The nice thing about having a car is your don’t have to wait for public transportation and you get from POINT A to B faster. However, sometimes it’s better to take public transportation because parking can be a nightmare. If you live downtown (places like San Francisco or NYC), sometimes is more economical to just take public transportation.

Is it worth getting a car for you?

The Power of the Banana

February 26, 2013

IMG_2576Did you ever stop and think how amazing the banana is?

A few years ago it was a hot commodity because of the banana diet.  I never followed the diet.  However, came across it again recently on ABL’s discovery of the awesomeness of the simplicity of the banana and what a great resource it is in these tough economic times.

The banana is:
– cheap ranging from $0.19 to $1.00 ($1.00 is really a rip off)
– a fruit already packaged. No ziplocs required. The edible piece is already self contained. Whoever designed the banana deserves kudos for the hand friendly peelable outer structure with the bright identifiable color.
– 75 to 135 calorie count (depending on banana size)
– great health benefits

These days, ABL always has a banana in her purse.  Easy to eat during the day if ABL forgets she can always head over to a store to buy one.  Great monkey (Nomo) food and a handy weapon to have when traveling on public  transportation.

Good health is start of good wealth!
